04How these bags are built

Most of a Yorepek bag is the wall between two compartments

Open the boot of a car after a Saturday and you can reconstruct the day from what is loose in it: a ball, one boot, a towel that was wet three hours ago lying across a jumper.

That is not a shortage of space. There is plenty of room in a car boot. What is missing is separation — somewhere the wet thing can be wet without the dry thing having to deal with it, and that is the decision almost every bag on these shelves is built around.

You can see it once you know to look. The soccer pack puts boots in a vented bay at the bottom, a ball in a cage on the outside, and the kit between them, sealed off from both. The golf organiser is a deck sitting on a ventilated shoe floor. The nail case is two slotted trays that pull out over each other. The slow cooker carrier is a pot below and a shelf for serving spoons above.

None of that is clever. It is more zips, more panels and more seam than one deep well, and it is where the money goes between a fifteen-dollar bag and a forty-five-dollar one. A bag with a single compartment is cheaper to make, and it is also the reason your towel is on your jumper.

What a bag does not do

A car seat bag is luggage, not a restraint, and a capacity figure is not advice about weight. Where a claim needs an outside authority — a child in an aeroplane seat, a loaded pack on a small back — we name the authority and link to it rather than to ourselves.

07How they are put together

Four things a Yorepek bag does that a plain holdall does not

Almost every disappointing bag in the world is a good bag asked to do a job it has no structure for. A holdall will carry golf shoes and a towel; it will just carry them touching each other. These four decisions are what the range spends its money on.

A vented bay for the dirty half

Boots, cleats and golf shoes get a compartment of their own with mesh panels, walled off from the kit. It is the reason a sports pack does not need airing after every match, and the reason the shirt above it stays clean.

Layers that pull out

On the nail cases and the trunk organisers the compartments are trays rather than pockets. A full case opens without anything being lifted over anything else, and the layer you are not using can come out and stay home.

Padding through the wall

The car seat and pram bags are three layers deep: a water-resistant outer, a padded middle, a lining. What that protects is not the fabric but the joints and the shell edges that have to survive a conveyor belt.

A body cut to a named object

A tripod case is 30.5, 40.5 or 50.5 inches long. A Cricut case is 23 by 9 by 9. A cooker carrier is specified in quarts. Where a bag exists for one thing, its dimensions are that thing's dimensions and the name says so.

12Before you pick a size

Six measurements that decide which Yorepek you need

Almost every bag that disappoints was the wrong size rather than the wrong bag. Six minutes with a tape measure settles all of it, and the numbers you need are printed on every card here.

Measure the machine, corner to corner

A seventeen-inch laptop needs a seventeen-inch sleeve, and a fifteen-inch one will take it only in the sense that a coat pocket takes a book. Measure the screen diagonally and match the sleeve rather than the litres.

Measure the car seat at its widest

Take the shell, not the child, and take it with the base attached if the base is coming. Then pick the body that clears it: 28 by 17 by 17 inches for an infant carrier or a compact convertible, 31.5 by 18.5 by 17 for a tall one that will not fold.

Fold the pram first, then measure it

The make and model matter less than the shape it actually folds into, and a compact fold and a standard fold of the same pram are different objects. Measure with the wheels on if the wheels are staying on.

Measure the tripod with the head on

This is the mistake that returns the most cases. A 50-inch stand goes into a 50.5-inch body only if the ball head has come off, and it usually has not. Measure what you carry, then take the length above it.

Read the quart figure off the pot

It is printed on the base of the cooker. One carrier here takes 6, 7 and 8 quarts, the other is cut for 8.5, and between the two you size up: a lid that will not close lets a full pot tip on a corner.

Weigh the pack, do not just fill it

If a bag is going to school on a child, the ceiling is 15% of that child's body weight, the bottom should sit in the curve of the lower back, and the straps should be two broad ones. Volume is not the test; the bathroom scales are.

Four things Yorepek will not claim for a bag

A bag does not make a seat airworthy

The safest place for a child under two on a US aeroplane is an approved child restraint in its own seat, not a lap, and the seat has to carry the line about being certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft. A seat that cannot be secured properly in an aircraft seat may be checked as baggage instead — which is the moment a bag matters, and the only moment.

Federal guidance on when a car seat may keep being used ends its list of conditions with a plain one: no visible damage to the seat. That is why the useful habit is opening the bag and looking at the shell before you install it, rather than after.

A light colour through a hold

I bought this for a trip where we would be flying and then renting a car and needed to bring our own car seat. I really like the light blue color, but you should know that it will show black scuffs after a trip being checked on a plane. I was pretty sure it would get some marks/stains and was willing to live with that to get the blue color so I’m not taking off stars for that, but if that would bother you I definitely recommend getting black so it’s not as noticeable.

A Minu V2, tray still on

Just flew United (with a connecting flight) with our Minu V2 and this bag. It worked out great! Not a scratch on the stroller. Bag wasn’t ripped. The fabric is pretty heavy duty. Padding is light but adequate. We didn’t have to take wheels off. Our snack tray was also left on. It’s definitely a tight fit -- i doubt we could have fit anything else in there. Definitely recommend.

Shell is nicely made, shoe area a little tight for two pair of shoes as shown, and mine are only size 9, so that might be limiting for larger sizes in 11 or up. Didn’t care that much for the section dividers on the top shelf, pretty weak, don’t expect those to last very long. However, the shell as indicated seems well made, zippers were good, I expect this unit to last a year or so.

Well, I finally broke down and organized my fingernail paraphernalia. This case did the trick! No more hunting for drill bits. No more hunting nailfiles. This item is very well-thought out. I will never fill all the polish slots. Here is my one quibble: I like Beetles nail polish, and the bottles sure aren’t round. Nor are they particularly small. Not all of them, anyway. They barely fit into the cutouts in the foam pad provided. It would be helpful if there were more options. You can squeeze them in, and I did, though I expect over time the foam will wear from the strain.

The pocket for the mats

This is a nice bad for transporting or even just storing your cricut machine. It has a bunch of pockets and spots for all your tools and accessories. Even allows you to carry some vinyl. It has a pocket on top for the cutting mats, but the mats say not to bend and this pocket stores them bent so I wont be using it. So thats a bummer. But I suppose the bag would be way too big with a proper pocket. I also wish it had a thicker or harder bottom to help hold its shape a little more. And its a thin canvas material. Not so much a padded protection bag. Thats why it gets 4 stars instead of 5. Otherwise Im completely happy with this.

Will a Yorepek backpack fit your 17-inch laptop?

The travel packs are built around a padded sleeve cut for a seventeen-inch machine, in a body of 17.5 by 13 by 8.5 inches. That is the figure to check against your own machine, because a fifteen-inch sleeve will take a fifteen-inch laptop and nothing larger, and the difference shows up as a second bag on your other shoulder.
